PNG versus SVG versus JSON for knitting charts

Choose an image for viewing, a vector for scalable layout, and an editable backup for returning to the chart maker.

Different export formats preserve different parts of a project. A clear image is useful at the needles, but it is not the same as an editable chart file. Keep more than one format when the design matters to you.

Use PNG for a convenient image

PNG is widely supported and works well for sharing a chart picture or placing it in a document. Its resolution is fixed. Enlarging a small image substantially can make labels and symbols less clear, so export at a useful size and inspect the actual file.

Use SVG for scalable graphics

SVG stores shapes and text in a vector format. It can be useful when arranging a printable pattern in software that supports it. Check font rendering and labels in the program you use. A vector image is still not automatically a fully editable stitch grid in the original tool.

Use JSON for project portability

The maker’s JSON backup stores chart cells and selected project settings so you can reopen the design here. Keep the file somewhere you can find it and test reopening it. Local browser saving is convenient, but browser cleanup or device loss can remove that copy.

  • Save an editable file before making major revisions.
  • Open exports outside the tool to verify them.
  • Name files by project and revision.
YOUR NEXT SMALL STEP

Download both JSON and your preferred viewing format. Reopen the JSON once so you know the backup contains the project you expect.
