My knitting chart is mirrored: find the direction error

Check construction mode, row order, chart orientation, and asymmetric reference details before flipping a design.

A mirrored result is easiest to diagnose with an asymmetric feature such as a letter. Before changing the whole chart, determine whether the drawing is reversed or the reading method was mismatched to the construction.

Identify the right-side view

The chart generally shows the fabric from the right side. Confirm which side of your knitted piece you are examining. A reverse-side view can make a correctly worked motif appear opposite to the drawing.

Check flat versus circular reading

Conventional flat knitting alternates reading direction between right-side and wrong-side rows. Circular knitting generally reads every round from right to left. Confirm the selected mode and inspect the first few row instructions. A symmetrical diamond can conceal this mistake, while a letter exposes it.

Choose the correct repair

If the chart itself needs reversing, save a backup and use a horizontal flip. If the reading method was wrong, fix the method rather than compensating with a second accidental reversal. Review directional stitch symbols separately because flips move cells without changing their meaning.

  • Use one asymmetric test motif.
  • Keep row numbers visible during work.
  • Check the intended viewing side in the pattern notes.
YOUR NEXT SMALL STEP

Draw a small letter F in the maker and compare Flat and In the round instructions. Use the test to confirm your reading method before restarting the main motif.
